Supporting Struggling Readers

Our Texts Fall Squarely Into The High School Lexile Level

The reading and videos in these courses range in Lexile Level from about 1050 to about 1400 (1050 = grades 9-10, 1400 = grades 11, 12, undergraduate). As such, the content can be difficult for middle school students or high school students reading below grade level

Listen Using the Course Audio

Encourage students who struggle with dense text to use the audio versions of Sessions while following along with the text on-screen or in print. Following along as they listen to the text read to that at an appropriate pace and with appropriate pronunciation, tone, and emphasis, can significantly improve their focus, comprehension, and understanding of contextual clues. The audio options can be found on the Session preview pages, as below

Chunking the Work

Break longer Sessions into smaller segments, allowing time for short discussions, summaries, or check-ins before moving on

Adjusting Assignments

You may reduce or eliminate assignments that don't meet the student where they're at. Assigned work should engage and stretch the student without overwhelming them with more than they can possibly do
